The Geology Group currently meets in the lounge at West Bradford Village Hall, at 2pm on the second Wednesday of the month.

We are enthusiastic learners, not expert geologists, and we welcome anyone with an interest in the fascinating world around us. We learn together.

Recently we have had updates on Volcanic activity, and the geology behind various earthquakes. A speaker helped us understand the complexity of defining geological periods. We have delved into the Silurian and Devonian periods, and the amazing development of life as shown in the fossils and remains. We were surprised by the ingredients of life found on the Asteroid Bennu, and by tectonic snowploughs, not to mention petrified trees and the Holey stones of Whitby. We answered the questions why does the atmospheric pressure change so much over time, and why does the saltiness of the oceans vary so much? We looked at various granites around the world, from Portugal to Tasmania, and understood why the Zechstein sea affected Durham and gave us fertilizer. We enjoyed an outing to Knaresborough, with fascinatim=ng rock boundaries and great coffee!  And that variety is all just in 2025!

Many of our regular meetings involve input from group members, who take a topic, go away and research it, then present to the group. Some members have done this for the first time in their lives! (U3A at its best). Occasionally we welcome outside speakers on a variety of topics.

New members are always welcome, we learn together, and also have a lot of fun. Our motto is Geology Rocks!
